INTERNATIONAL NIGHT OF NIGHTS On Cup Eve Monday 2nd November the inaugural Omond Aussies v Internationals Twenty20 Match was held. In perfect weather conditions a good crowd assembled, many dressed in the sporting colors of their country of origin. The boundary close to the grandstand was shortened to provide a carnival atmosphere, and the crowd enjoyed the opportunity to sit on the ground under the umbrellas. The international food wagon and bar did a roaring trade. Our Club President Geoff Cowen presided over the festivities in a regal manner, and his colourful costume was certainly impossible to miss. After the teams lined up for the playing of the National Anthems, the Aussies batted first and amassed an impressive score of 210 from their 20 overs. Top scorer was Simon Beshara, who retired after scoring 45 runs including 2 sixes. Willo also retired after scoring 26 runs. The Internationals started well with Arvind Krishnamoorthy dismissed for 24. The highlight of their innings was the batting display by Christo Otto, who hit 3 consecutive huge sixes to the horror of the bowler, Club Captain/Coach Simon Beshara. Christo retired with 34 runs including 5 sixes. Despite the Internationals co-opting some local help, they fell short in their chase and finished their 20 overs with 162 runs. Many of the spectators and participants then retired to the clubrooms for the International Banquet/Smorgasbord. A wonderful meal of lasagnas and curries followed by pavlova and gelatis was enjoyed by all. Some great entertainment was provided by Sam Kindlen and his fellow band member. Some of us invested in Melbourne Cup Sweep horses. and congratulations to those who chose winning horses. Thanks to Shane Blandford and all his helpers who were involved in organising the evening and the wonderful food. R.M.
