Ormond Cricket Club

History

Ormond Cricket Club had roots going back to the turn of last century but the moves leading to the formation of the club as it exists today started with brief sojourns in the Brighton District Cricket Association and the Frankston-Glenhuntly Cricket Association, Ormond joined the Caulfield District Cricket Association (CDCA) in 1921. Also during these years an entirely separate club, Ormond Park, used the No.2 oval. This arrangement remained until after the War and caused very keen rivalry. It was in 1947 that Ernie Gunn (President) and George Corbett (Secretary) made moves towards amalgamation, and with cooperation with Ormond Park officials such as Len Sykes, Fred Ebbott and Bill Dynon this was done prior to the 1947-48 Season. Once a Turf wicket was laid on the main oval an application to join the VJCA (now the VTCA) was tabled and accepted.
We of course had to prove ourselves on the field and VJCA South A premierships in 1947-48 and 1948-49 did that exactly. We fielded in all six senior sides, four on the matting with the CDCA and three Under 16 elevens.

In the season of 1949-50 we were admitted on a probationary basis to the Sub District, along with Balwyn, Sunshine and Oakleigh. We were quickly made aware that our success in the VJCA was not going to continue in the Sub District and we lost our first Ten games, eventually beating Hawthorn-East Melbourne to record our first win.

In the winter of 1953 Turf wickets were laid on the North-East Oval, which meant we now could enter two VSDCA, two VJCA and two CDCA sides.

After settling into the tougher competition, success came in the form of a Second Eleven Premiership in 1954-55. It was a further three seasons before we could claim a First Eleven Premiership, ten years after amalgamation in 1957-58. This turned out to be a successful season with the Third Eleven claiming the Premiership in the VJCA South Section Firsts to complement the First Elevens wins. The following season the First Eleven defended the Premiership which capped off the season after seeing Turf wickets laid in the South-East corner of the park allowing us to field two VSDCA and four VJCA sides.

A Fourth Eleven Premiership in 1961-62 in the VJCA South B Division was all the Club could manage in the next Six years. But what a difference the next Ten years brings! In the Ten seasons between 1965-66 to 1974-75, Ormond won six First Eleven Premierships, two Runner-ups and a Runner-up in the Second Eleven. Many a Sub District Club would be envious of this record.
