The Ormond Cricket Club has developed a new coaching framework for the Junior Section of the Club.  This will ensure a more effective outcome is achieved for our young cricketers in the areas of skill acquisition and appreciation for the game.   The key to the success of this approach is the creation of a new position within the Club, the Junior Coaching Coordinator, and the aim that each junior team will have an accredited cricket coach.

The junior coaching framework is as follows:
·         Junior Coaching Coordinator develops and oversees the cricket skills acquisition program for the U/12s, U/14s and U/16s, with the skills developed at the U/16 level being consistent with the entry skills required to advance into senior cricket.
·         U/16s
One Head Coach, supported by two Assistant Coaches (one for U/16As, one for U/16Bs)
·         U/14s
One Coach for the Saturday U/14s, one Coach for the Twilight U/14As, one Coach for the Twilight U/14Bs
·         U/12s
One Head Coach for the U/12A & the U/12B teams, supported by two Assistant Coaches (one for U/12As, one for U/12Bs).
One Head Coach for the U/12C & the U/12D teams, supported by two Assistant Coaches (one for U/12Cs, one for U/12Ds).
Summary: 6 Coaches, 6 Assistant Coaches

All junior coaches will be assisted and coordinated by the recently appointed Junior Coaching Coordinator, DARREN STAIT.  Darren will provide expert leadership and instruction, and at the same time will provide all coaches with the necessary resources, ideas and equipment to ensure your stint as a Coach is enjoyable and effective.  Darren is an accredited Level 2 (training) coach.  Position Statements for the role of Coach and for the role of Assistant Coach are attached.  (If you are not able to open these attachments, please contact either Darren or Richard Simon on the telephone numbers listed below).

In addition, the Club Executive is currently purchasing a bowling machine to assist with training, and the Council has almost completed the replacement and upgrade the cricket nets at EE Gunn Reserve.  These are exciting times for the junior section of the Ormond Cricket Club, especially with the establishment of the new junior coaching structure and the subsequent appointment of Darren as Junior Coaching Coordinator.

There are many benefits for senior players and “older” junior players who choose to become a Coach or an Assistant Coach, including:

  1. Coaching will give you a more comprehensive understanding and appreciation for the game.
  2. Coaching will improve your people management skills.
  3. Coaching will give you an opportunity to pass on your cricket knowledge and experience to young cricketers.
  4. Coaching will give you the very unique experience and satisfaction of watching young cricketers develop and improve in “front of your very own eyes” ……. and YOU are directly responsible!!
  5. Coaching can be your way to give something back to the Ormond Cricket Club.

For parents of young cricketers, becoming a Coach or an Assistant Coach will give you the formal skills and appreciation for the game that will allow you to be a qualified “life time” cricket coach of your children.  You will also experience the satisfaction of watching other young cricketers develop and improve throughout the season under your guidance and encouragement.

It is important to note that the preferred and desired accreditation for the coaches (as noted in the Position Statements), are not mandatory.  Rather, the Club would like to have the opportunity through Darren’s leadership and instruction to firstly pass on some basic coaching principles, training drills, etc, to get you started, and to then encourage you attend a locally arranged ACB accreditation training course at a later date.  The Club will pay all training course fees.

The Club Executive urges you to seriously consider nominating for a Coaching or Assistant Coaching position.  All expressions of interest to become a Coach or an Assistant Coach should be directed to Darren on mobile 0407 559 383, or by email to staity29@bigpond.com.au .

General enquiries about the coaching structure or the roles and responsibilities of coaches can also be made to Darren, or to Richard Simon (Junior Section Coordinator).
