ORMOND’s U/15 HATCH TEAM 2008 HAS SUCCESSOrmond U15 Hatch Team – CHAMPIONS Ormond 167 d Broadmeadows 7/162 In an exciting Final, played at Ivanhoe on Sunday 27th January 2008, Ormond defeated Broadmeadows by 5 runs to win the Club’s first ever premiership in the RM Hatch Competition. Ormond batted first and were bowled out for 167, and in reply Broadmeadows finished on 7/162 after some exceptional fielding and bowling halted their run chase. In last years Hatch report, I mentioned that all looked promising for future years for Hatch at the Ormond Cricket Club. Little did I know that the 2008 Ormond team would win the Under 15 RM Hatch Competition for the first time in the history of the competition!! The 2008 Ormond Hatch Team performed extremely well and was undefeated in their 5 Group matches. What became obvious throughout these games was that not only did we have a great group of boys playing, but that they all came together as a TEAM. Much of the credit for this must go to the coach, Simon Beshara, and Assistant Coach, Alex Davies, who spent a lot of time coaching the boys and also creating the team environment. Throughout these games it was a TEAM effort that got us through with no one player standing out. Both Simon and I were thrilled to see this type of development especially to both Ormond boys, Brad Wilson, who captained the side with great maturity, and Tom Cameron, who will likely have further opportunities next year. What was also evident was the attitude the boys had of never giving up during any game. Our Semi-Final was played against Oakleigh who had us chasing 114. We lost a number of quick wickets but excellent fighting performances from Josh Allen (36). Sam Quigley(27) and James Wilcock (26) got us over the line to make the Grand Final. In the Grand Final against Broadmeadows, another outstanding performance from Ben Boyle (53 n/o) and James Wilcock (27) meant we set them a score of 168 to win. With them cruising at 1/100, some exceptional catching from Justin Anagnostopoulos (running with the ball in the outfield to take the catch), and Luke Barda (taking a “screamer” at mid-wicket) turned the game around. Some first-rate bowling from Josh Allen (3/22) and a great last over bowled by James Wilcock meant Broadmeadows fell 5 runs short. The team came back from the “brink” once again which just proved to us how the team was willing to fight to the end. What a great team win it was!!! Graeme Hyman Manager, Ormond Hatch Team 2008
